Myths vs Facts

MYTH #1: If my car is in an accident and is not safe to drive, it has to be towed to the city impound lot.

FACT: It is YOUR choice where to have your car towed, NOT the police, the tow driver, or your insurance company. When you call ProCare (even if it’s after our business hours) we can send our towing partner to pick up your vehicle within 30 minutes and have it taken to our shop’s secure outdoor lot. If it is after hours, we will first get your vehicle to a safe place. Then, first thing in the morning, we’ll help you understand all repair options and next steps, including assisting you with getting an insurance claim started.

MYTH #2: I have to go to one of the shops my insurance company refers me to for repairs.

FACT: The law states that it is YOUR CHOICE where you get your vehicle repaired and without penalty. The insurance company representative and/or adjuster have NO authority to tell you where to have your vehicle repaired. Just because an insurer may contact you with a specific body shop does not require you to use that body shop, nor does it guarantee you will receive the highest quality repair or service. It is your car and your choice to select a competent collision repair facility to properly restore your vehicle to its pre-loss condition.

MYTH #3: You must obtain multiple estimates.
FACT: There is no law requiring you to get more than one estimate. Also, you do NOT have to take your vehicle to a drive-in claims center or your insurance company’s preferred shop for an estimate. If you are looking for the lowest estimate you may find one, but the lowest estimate is often the most incomplete estimate. Any shop that fixes your car correctly, completely, and with the same parts will cost about the same.
MYTH #4: All repair shops are basically the same.

FACT: NOT TRUE. There are substantial differences among repair shops. Some have made considerably large investments in equipment and training. Many have not. Always do your homework when selecting a repair facility.

• Ask friends for recommendations.
• Is the staff attentive, knowledgeable, and courteous?
• They should offer a written lifetime guarantee. Ask about what certified training they have and review their online reputation.

MYTH #5: I should go to the dealer for collision repairs to maintain my vehicle manufacturer’s warranty.

FACT: The manufacturer warrants only the parts used in the repair process. This warranty is in effect with independent repairers as well. Furthermore, independent repair shops specialize in collision repair only, where as dealers must also focus attention on selling new and used cars, servicing vehicles, operating parts departments, etc. Independent facilities use the same manufacturer-warranted parts as the dealer.
